1. Trudeau was 'respectful' during visit to Kootenays ski resort, business claims

Justin Trudeau was "very low-key" and "respectful" during his vacation at the RED Mountain Resort in the Kootenays over the Christmas period, according to one of the business's representatives. That remark comes after the prime minister was accused on social media of acting like a "big shot" and upsetting locals by jumping lines. Trudeau flew home, out of Kelowna, on Jan. 2.


2. Carney to announce Liberal leadership bid in Edmonton today

Mark Carney is set to formally announce his Liberal leadership bid in Edmonton today, according to reports. The former governor of the Bank of Canada and Bank of England has attempted to promote himself as an outsider with no connection to the government of Justin Trudeau, which he advises on economic policy.


3. Alberta First Nation opposes $70 billion AI data centre

A plan by celebrity investor Kevin O'Leary to build the largest AI data in the world in northern Alberta faces opposition from the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation. The mooted $70 billion project, which has won praise from Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, has caused "grave concern" in the local nation, Chief Sheldon Sunshine said.


4. Freeland would replace carbon tax with new scheme if she becomes Liberal leader: report

Former finance minister Chrystia Freeland will dump the current version of the carbon tax if she wins the Liberal leadership race, according to reports. Freeland has not yet officially announced her bid, but is widely expected to do so this week. She is reportedly "ready to make difficult decisions" by replacing the consumer carbon tax with a new system "developed collaboratively with provinces and territories."


5. Democracy at risk as 'oligarchy' takes shape in US: Joe Biden

Echoing the famous words of President Dwight Eisenhower more than six decades ago, Joe Biden has used his farewell address to speak of an emerging "tech-industrial complex" in the US that could come to dominate the entire country. He said "an oligarchy is taking shape in America of extreme wealth, power and influence that really threatens our entire democracy, our basic rights and freedom."
