1. Man who took bus hostage on Rio de Janeiro bridge shot by police

An armed man took passenger on a bus hostage in Brazil this morning. The incident began shortly before 6 am local time on the Rio-Niterói Bridge in Rio de Janeiro. A standoff with armed police lasted about three hours before a sniper shot and killed the kidnapper. All hostages were unharmed and are now free.


2. Open-air movie night goes terribly wrong in Colorado

What was supposed to be a peaceful movie night under the stars in Denver this weekend took a turn for the worse. The wind picked up and it sent the air mattresses that were laid out for patrons into the air. Robb Manes caught the hilarious moment in a short video, but witnesses said the mattresses were on the loose for 30 minutes.


3. Billie Eilish dethrones Lil Nas X at the top of the Billboard Hot 100

Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” spent 19 weeks on top of the Billboard Hot 100, breaking a record for the longest run at No. 1. This week, however, there’s a new song in the top spot for the first time since April. Billie Eilish has dethroned Lil Nas X with her song “Bad Guy,” which makes her the first artist born in the 2000s to claim the No. 1 spot.


4. Wildfires have people worrying about the Amazon rainforest

It’s been a tough year for Brazil when it comes to wildfires. The number of fires in the first eight months of 2019 are up 82% over the same time period in 2018. It was many expressing their concern over the country’s natural resources and the fate of the Amazon rainforest.


5. Elton John defends Harry and Meghan from ‘unnecessary press intrusion’

Elton John took to Twitter on Monday to defend Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who are currently under fire from the British press for their use of a private jet for their vacation. A dear friend of Princess Diana, John said he feels obliged to protect Harry and his family and provided them with a “carbon neutral” private jet to take them to his home so they could have a few days of privacy.
