Five things you need to know

1. Paramount buys UFC rights in massive $7.7B deal

Paramount is the new home of the UFC. The groundbreaking deal is for seven years at $1.1 billion annually, totalling $7.7 billion. It puts an end to the pay-per-view model for UFC fights, as Paramount+ users won’t be charged any additional fees for access to the UFC’s full slate of 13 marquee events and 30 “Fight Nights” each year.

2. Survey suggests Canadians are open to mandatory service for those under 30

A recent survey conducted by Angus Reid found that the majority of Canadians are open to making those under 30 mandatorily serve the country for a year. However, there isn’t nearly as much support for making that service time be in the military. Instead, people would be able to serve the mandatory time in the fields of civil protection, public health support, environmental support or youth services.

3. Federal judge rejects Trump DOG’s bid to unseal grand jury materials in Ghislaine Maxwell case

The Department of Justice’s request to unseal grand jury materials from the Ghislaine Maxwell sex trafficking case has been denied by a federal judge. The judge said unsealing the case’s materials is not a matter of historical or public interest. He added that much of the grand jury materials the DOG is seeking has already been public and was presented during the trial in 2021.

4. Police say stolen Sea-Doo used in alleged illegal border crossing

Police in Ontario are looking for a man who allegedly entered the United States on a stolen Sea-Doo. They say the man rented the watercraft in Sarnia on Saturday night and was meant to return an hour later. Police now suspect the 40-year-old Toronto man successfully crossed the border illegally and US Customers and Immigration have been notified.

5. Tesla applies for licence to supply electricity to British homes

Elon Musk’s Tesla has applied to the British energy regulation for a licence that would allow the company to supply electricity to homes in the United Kingdom.
