Over 10-million packs of Player’s cigarettes recalled in Canada

Health Canada has issued a significant recall for a popular brand of cigarettes.

More than 10-million packs of Player’s cigarettes are affected by the nationwide recall, which is due to a fire hazard.

According to Health Canada, the cigarettes do not meet the performance standards required by the country’s Cigarette Ignition Propensity Regulations (CIPR).

The CIPRs require that when tested, all cigarettes manufactured in or imported into Canada must burn their full length no more than 25% of the time,” the recall explains.

“Cigarettes that do not meet the performance requirements pose an increased fire hazard. Cigarettes that are dropped onto furniture, bedding or other textile products may cause a fire to start.”

The recall involves regular-sized Player’s, Player’s Smooth and Player’s Original cigarettes in packages of 20 and 25, as well as cartons.

They were sold in all provinces and territories with the exception of Nunavut and the Yukon.

The affected smokes were manufactured in Mexico and sold between August 2021 and June 2022.

Fortunately, as of July 12, 2022, the company has received no reports of incidents or injuries involving these cigarettes in Canada.

However, consumers are still urged to stop using the recalled products immediately.

Those affected can contact Imperial Tobacco Canada Limited for more information, which can be done by phoning 1-800-932-9326. Complaints can also be filed online.

If you are unsure if your cigarettes are affected, you can check the traceability code on the bottom of the pack or carton and reference it with the recall information online.
