The art piece, a white-painted, melancholic-looking figure on the theatre’s black emergency exit doorway, was believed to be in commemoration of the victims of the Paris terror attacks that occurred in November 2015.

Over 350 people were injured and approximately 129 were killed during the terrorist attacks on Nov. 13, 2015.

The Bataclan reported the theft from their premises early Saturday morning, stating on their Facebook page (translated), “It is a deep outrage that animates us today. Banksy’s work, a symbol of contemplation and belonging to all: residents, Parisians, citizens of the world, has been stolen.”

“Artist Banksy offered this work of art on the bataclan emergency exit door for a reason: that of his choice of urban artist and in a momentum of tribute and support.”
