Child dies after ‘tragic accident’ involving Peloton treadmill

A child has died following an incident involving a Peloton treadmill.

The company’s CEO, John Foley penned a letter to consumers regarding the child’s death and the safety of the Tread+.

“I’m reaching out to you today because I recently learned about a tragic accident involving a child and the Tread+, resulting in, unthinkably, a death,” he wrote.

“While we are aware of only a small handful of incidents involving the Tread+ where children have been hurt, each one is devastating to all of us at Peloton, and our hearts go out to the families involved.”

The letter didn’t provide any details about what happened to the child or where the incident occurred.

Foley did say that Peloton designs all of its products with safety in mind, but part of that safety responsibility does fall on the user.

He added that it’s especially true while we’re still in a global pandemic where so many people are still at home.

The following tips were offered up to help prevent any kind of accident involving Peloton machines:

  • Keep children and pets away from Peloton exercise equipment at all times. Before you begin a workout, double check to make sure that the space around your Peloton exercise equipment is clear.
  • When you finish a workout on your Tread+, remove the safety key and store it out of reach of children and anyone else who should not be able to start the Tread+.

“We are always looking for new ways to ensure that you have the best experience with our products,” said Foley.

“We are currently assessing ways to reinforce our warnings about these critical safety precautions to hopefully prevent future accidents.”

The Peloton's website explains that the 132-kilogram Tread+ treadmills are made mostly of carbon steel and feature a rotating belt made of woven nylon that can reach speeds of more than 19 km/h.
