Joe Biden has picked his vice president running mate and she’s got Canadian roots.
The Democratic candidate selected Kamala Harris, who was originally seeking the Democratic nomination herself until she withdrew from the race on Dec. 3, 2019.
Harris is the first African American woman and South Asian American to be picked as a vice presidential running mate by a presumptive presidential nominee for a major party.
After growing up in Berkley, Harris moved to Montreal with her mom and sister when she was 12 years old as her mom accepted a job teaching at McGill University and a research position at Jewish General Hospital.
Making the announcement on Twitter today, Biden called Kamala “a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one fo the country’s finest public servants.”
Back when Kamala was Attorney General, she worked closely with Beau. I watched as they took on the big banks, lifted up working people, and protected women and kids from abuse. I was proud then, and I'm proud now to have her as my partner in this campaign.— Joe Biden (@JoeBiden) August 11, 2020
He added that she worked closely with his son Beau when she was the Attorney General of California between 2011 and 2017.
“I watched as they took on the big banks, lifted up working people, and protected women and kids from abuse,” Biden wrote on Twitter.
“I was proud then, and I'm proud now to have her as my partner in this campaign.”
.@JoeBiden can unify the American people because he's spent his life fighting for us. And as president, he'll build an America that lives up to our ideals.— Kamala Harris (@KamalaHarris) August 11, 2020
I'm honored to join him as our party's nominee for Vice President, and do what it takes to make him our Commander-in-Chief.
Meanwhile, Harris took to Twitter as well saying that she’s honoured to join Biden as the Democrat’s nominee for vice president.
Joe Biden can unify the American people because he's spent his life fighting for us,” she said, “and as president, he'll build an America that lives up to our ideals.”
The United States’ presidential election will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2020.
