Biden inches closer to victory after flipping Wisconsin and Michigan

There’s still a number of close races that will decide America’s 2020 presidential election, but Joe Biden and the Democrats have to be happy with how the day has gone.

Over the course of the day, a pair of important swing states that flipped from blue to red in the 2016 election flipped back to blue.

First it was Wisconsin, where Biden holds a 20,000-vote lead with 99% of votes having been counted.

President Donald Trump’s campaign says they’ll call for a recount in that state and it’s close enough where they can do so.

There was a recount in Wisconsin in 2016 after the Republicans won by around 23,000 votes, but it didn’t change the result.

Next up was Michigan, which flipped from red to blue just over two hours after Wisconsin.

After a 9,000-vote win for the Republicans in Michigan four years ago, it was another close race in that state before the Democrats pulled away today.

Alaska has not been projected yet, but Trump has a large lead there and that state will stay red.

That means that the race will come down to the results in Nevada, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Georgia and North Carolina.

Nevada has been dead quiet all day with Biden holding the same 8,000 vote lead he had this morning, but the rest of the votes reportedly won’t be counted until Thursday.

North Carolina has been stalled all day as well, but it’s still expected that the Republicans will eke out a win there.

Trump started the day with large leads in both Pennsylvania and Georgia, but those leads have shrunk considerably over the course of the day.

Despite the current Republican lead, oddsmakers have the Democrats as sizeable favourites to win both states, which would certainly be a surprise in Georgia, but more expected in Pennsylvania.

Biden currently leads by around 75,000 votes in Arizona with just over 500,000 votes still to be counted.

Many experts predict that the Democrats will hold on to flip Arizona from red to blue, but it's certainly too early to project it as a win for Biden at this point.

However these final five states end up, there’s a path to victory for both Biden and Trump, but that path is a lot clearer for the Democratic challenger.

It’s unlikely a winner will be declared tonight.
