As a result of the ongoing pipeline protests, VIA Rail has halted all of its trains.
Protesters standing up against the Coastal GasLink project that crosses Wet’suwet’en First Nation territory have created a number of railroad blockades in BC, Manitoba and Ontario.
The blockades have already resulted in hundreds of trips being cancelled and now, VIA Rail is cancelling all trips until the matter is resolved.
“VIA Rail has no other option but to cancel all of its services on the network, effective immediately and until further notice,” said a statement from the company.
“We understand the impact this unfortunate situation has on our passengers and regret the significant inconvenience this is causing to their travel plans.”
Any trains that were in transit when this announcement was made at 1 pm PST will be brought to the closest major train station.
According to the Canadian Press, the company has sought and obtained court orders and assistance to end the blockades.
Those court orders have been effective in Manitoba, ignored in Ontario and appear to be working towards a resolution in BC.
