Strike notice avoided as Canada Post, workers' union continue negotiating

Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) say talks are continuing and a strike notice was not issued on Sunday.

According to a news release from CUPW, an agreement was reached with Canada Post to continue negotiations.

Last week, the union said members would start striking on Nov. 3 if no agreement was reached.

The union presented a handful of conditions to avoid a strike.

That includes Canada Post not issuing a 72-hour lockout notice, not changing working conditions for union members and showing “real movement” towards meeting CUPW demands.

“We brought these conditions to Canada Post through the federal mediator. The Employer agreed to our terms for continuing toward a negotiated collective agreement,” the news release said.

Last week, Canada Post offered an 11.5% wage increase over four years. That was up from a proposed increase of 10%, which was offered the week before.

Although talks are ongoing, the union says if talks break down a strike notice could still be issued.
