Hundreds of thousands of bottles of eucalyptus oil have been recalled after a child accidentally ingested the substance.
Health Canada said its recall concerns the NOW Eucalyptus Globulus Oil product.
The department warned that the oil “poses an aspiration hazard if inhaled or ingested.”
Accidental exposure to the product could “lead to serious illness or injury, including death,” it added.
“Aspiration into the lungs can occur when the product enters the lungs directly or is coughed up or vomited after being ingested,” Health Canada’s warning explains.
“This coughing/vomiting could cause small particles of the product to travel into the lungs, or the product may be inhaled directly in the form of a fine mist.”
The product’s labelling does not meet requirements set by law, according to the recall notice.
As of Feb. 14, according to Health Canada, the company has logged one report of an incident involving a child “accidentally ingesting the oil.”
More than 223,000 of the products have been sold in Canada since January 2022.
Health Canada said anyone in possession of the product should immediately stop using it and keep it away for kids.
It should then be returned to the retailer from which it was purchased for a refund.
