Health Canada has recalled a brand of dog treats that have been linked to an ongoing salmonella outbreak.
The outbreak, which was first reported in mid-September, started off at 27 cases. On Oct. 17, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) said that grew to 31 cases.
As of Oct. 28, that number has not increased but Health Canada but six of the salmonella cases have now been linked to certain Puppy Love and Puppy World Brand raw pet treats.
The Public Health Agency of Canada’s investigation has determined that the recalled pet treats contain salmonella oranienburg and pose a risk of cross contamination and illness after handling the pet treats.
The Puppy Love products come in black and red packaging and the Puppy World treats come in black and green packaging.

The recall includes puppy beef chews, chicken breast treats, chicken wing tip treats and lamb lung treats.
A total of 12,630 units of the recalled treats were sold in Canada between February and October of this year. They were manufactured in Fort MacLeod, Alberta.

Anyone who purchased the Puppy Love and Puppy World Brand treats is being told to immediately stop using them and dispose of them.
A source for the other cases of illness has not been identified.
“Salmonella can spread to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not washed their hands after having contact with their pet's foods, surfaces and/or pets that have been in contact with the contaminated product,” the recall said.
Salmonella can affect both humans and pets and symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and fever. Humans can have abdominal cramping and pets can have decreased appetite or excessive salivation.

A majority of the salmonella cases continue to be seen in Alberta and British Columbia, which have both had 14 cases.
Ontario has had two cases and the Northwest Territories has had one case.
Although seven people have been hospitalized, there have been no deaths reported.
