Ford is recalling nearly 550,000 vehicles in North America, including almost 37,000 in Canada.
The recall is due to a rollaway risk caused by defective shifter cable that allow drivers to place the car in park, even though the transmission might still be in another gear.
Certain 2013-16 Ford Fusions and 2013-14 Ford Escape vehicles are named in the recall that affects vehicles throughout North America.
“On affected vehicles, the bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission may detach from the transmission. A degraded shifter cable bushing that detaches from the transmission may allow the transmission to be in a gear state different than the gearshift position selected by the driver,” said Ford in a statement.
“If the parking brake is not applied, a degraded shifter cable bushing that detaches from the transmission could result in unintended vehicle movement, increasing the risk of injury or crash.”
The affect vehicles include:
Ford said it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this condition.
Dealers will replace the shifter cable bushing at no cost to the customer and owners are instructed to use their parking brake.
