A new Canadian loonie in circulation to honour the creator of the telephone

A new and colourful loonie is in circulation across Canada, thanks to the Royal Canadian Mint.

The commemorative $1 coin was created to celebrate Canadian innovation, and highlight who Mint depicts as a ‘significant contributor to our modern world.’

Alexander Graham Bell, better known for his invention of the telephone, will be appearing on the new coin for the 175th anniversary of his birthday.

While Bell was born in Scotland, he travelled to Brantford, Ontario in the 1870s with his family to set up a workshop for his many inventions.

It was during his time in Canada, that Bell conceived the idea for the telephone.

After receiving his patents and building the first Canadian telephone factory in Brantford, he moved to Nova Scotia where he continued pioneering new air and marine crafts.

“On the 175th anniversary of his birthday, we honour Bell’s many achievements and innovative spirit,” explained the Royal Canadian Mint.

“The 2022 commemorative circulation coin is not only a celebration of Bell but also a reminder of our collective role in building a brighter future for generations to come.”

The one–dollar coin created by Canadian artist Chris Gorey, depicts a reproduction of Bell’s signature paired with a portrait of the inventor in his later years alongside two of his inventions.

The Silver Dart, the aircraft that achieved the first controlled, powered flight in Canada and the record-setting HD-4 hydrofoil; both of which made history on Bras d’Or Lake, represented by the waves that are highlighted in blue on the colourized coin.

According to Mint, two million coloured and one million uncoloured Bell 175 $1 commemorative coins will be entering circulation.
