Stress

We are born into this world via a series of stresses.

Your mom and her body had to work really hard to get us out here to take our first breath. Your body literally keeps growing as a child and teenager because of stress. As an adult, your body responds to your ability to adapt to + cope with stress, both positive and negative. Let’s use the example of great friendships.

If you have great friendships there are a bunch of feel-good hormones and signals that are sent from the brain to the body that it feels good and therefore there’s usually a positive perception/experience of that great friendship = less stress response

(Yes, there are many complexities that I’ve skipped over and know that I’m using this as a very simple example).

If we counter that with the example of working 70 hours a week for four years in a row with no days off, your brain sends particular hormones and messages to your body that doesn’t feel good and in turn has another adverse reaction throughout the body = more stress response.

Stress isn’t a secret. We all have it. It comes to us in different forms + shapes and it is processed by each of us differently too. We all react to stress in a myriad of ways and perceive stress through our own lens of experience.

Whether it’s friendships or work, a baby coming into the world or a cancer diagnosis, going for a run or getting in a car accident, your body is working really hard under the radar.

Depending on how you perceive the stresses in your life will determine how you feel, you’ve probably recognized that in your life a few times already.

The good news? You can change those responses that are happening under the radar in your body!!!! By being reflective, curious and slowing down you literally change yourself on a cellular level.

When you practice down-regulating your nervous system (hint: yoga and meditation), when you walk in nature, when you read or listen to music, you have an opportunity to change the stress response inside of you.

This is a skill that requires practice. This is something that you can work on when you’re in the grocery store and someone cuts in front of you in line. Take a deep breath. Or how about when you hit seven red lights in a row? Remind yourself to slow down.

This is the good work of life. I don’t know about you but I don’t want stress responses running my show. There’s so much goodness in life. I’d rather soak that up and give myself space + grace to refine my reactions. Another little hint — it’s way better when you get those stressful things off your chest.

They are way less heavy when you do.

Happy long weekend!

Xx
