In Focus | Meghan Carr

Meet Meghan. Meghan Carr has lived in Kelowna for two and a half years. She makes a positive difference in people's lives by helping them stay organized; she is a professional organizer.

Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kelowna?
I moved here from Vancouver 2.5 years ago.

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
My fiancé Shaun Sanders because we’re always laughing and joking around when we’re together, and because he’s incredibly knowledgeable about so many different subjects, so I’m always learning from him.

What is your favourite local store in Kelowna and why?
Lakehouse Home Store because I love all the furniture, décor and it has such a cozy feel to it, anytime of the year.

Describe yourself in one word.
Determined.

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
Nashville, Tennessee because I was researching it only yesterday for my next trip and it sounds like a really cool place!

What is your favourite activity in Kelowna?
Cooling off in Okanagan Lake on a hot summer’s day.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
I rarely get embarrassed anymore, but if I’m ever late for anything, that can be slightly embarrassing because as a Professional Organizer I feel that in other’s eyes it’s even more unacceptable than for the average person.

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
Reading the book The Secret and learning about the Law of Attraction and how our thoughts create our reality, whether we’re aware of it or not. Thoughts become things, so it's important to be aware of what we spend most of our time thinking about.

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
Summers and long weekends at my family cabin that my dad built for us on Okanagan Lake. Swimming, reading, relaxing with family and friends, without Internet or TV for days on end.

Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
I volunteer at the Greater Westside Board of Trade each week, helping them with various administrative tasks in the office and sometimes at their monthly business networking events. I also volunteer with the West K Women of Influence, assisting with their social media and event planning.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
That everyone have a positive mindset, one of abundance, as opposed to one of scarcity and lack. I wish everyone would look for the good in every person and in every situation.

Where would you sneak away to in Kelowna to spend some time alone?
Along Abbott Street in Kelowna or Gellatly Bay on the Westside.

Where would you like to see positive change in Kelowna and why?
I wish people were less resistant to crossing the bridge, from either side, because both Kelowna AND West Kelowna have a lot to offer and many people are missing out as a result.

What do you think makes Kelowna great?
Okanagan Lake, hands down!

What are 3 things on your bucket list?
1. Travel to all 50 states
2. Ride in a hot air balloon
3. Go on a safari

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I used to collect Archie comics when I was a kid and I still have my Cheryl Blossom collection in mint condition!

How do people connect with you, personally, through social media?
Instagram and Facebook

What is the name of your business/organization?
Get Organized with Meg

Why did you get into/start this business?
I wanted to be my own boss, doing something that would definitely make a positive difference in other’s lives, while I was having fun doing something that came naturally to me (organizing).

What is the goal of your business?
To help others declutter and reorganize their homes in a way that make sense for them because life is a lot less stressful when things are orderly and organized.

What has been your biggest struggle either at work or in life?
To stop comparing myself to others. We’re all on our own individual journey, but it seems that I continually need to remind myself of this.

If you could start all over again would you do things the same or would things be different?
I would put myself first way more often by ending unhealthy relationships sooner and leaving unsatisfying jobs earlier.

What do you always find yourself saying?
Everything happens for a GOOD reason. Not just for any reason, but for a good reason. That reason may not be immediately obvious to you, but it will be eventually. Look for the good in every situation.

Tell us your best piece of life advice.
Learn to trust your gut over your mind, every time.

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
Esther Hicks, an incredible inspirational speaker and author on the subject of the Law of Attraction.

Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
If we don’t support local businesses, there won’t be any local businesses anywhere and I think that would make for a pretty dull city or town. By shopping local you can support a business owner’s passion or dream and that’s a really wonderful thing.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Running a half marathon!

Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
Shaun Sanders, my fiancé and the Chef/Owner of the new Renegade Kitchen Food Truck serving 100% plant-based comfort food in town. He is extremely creative and talented, and his food speaks for itself!

My choice for the KelownaNow In Focus spotlight is:
Shaun Sanders

Some general comments I would like to share are:
I think sometimes people forget how good we have it here. Coming from Vancouver, I find people in Kelowna a lot friendlier and more laid back, and we’re not living in such a rat race here. Sure, housing prices are high and rentals aren’t as widely available or as affordable as they once were, but it’s not nearly as bad as in the Lower Mainland. I feel very fortunate to be able to call Kelowna my home!
