Meet David & Jaimie Haywood! David is originally from Thompson MB, and Jaimie is from Chauvin, AB and Invermere, BC. They both love spending quality time with each other, and at the very first moment they met, it became crystal clear they wanted to start this business together.
Where are you from and how long have you lived in Penticton?
David - Thompson, MB
Jaimie - Chauvin AB & Invermere BC.
Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
We come as a package, haha! Each other and our son!
What is your favourite local store in Penticton and why?
David - Our local breweries are second to none! Tin Whistle, Cannery, Bad Tattoo.
Jaimie - I'm a pretty big fan of 4th Meridian Vintage & Art, they are neighbours of ours in the Cannery Trade Centre and they have INCREDIBLE art & furniture.
Describe yourself in one word.
David - Ambitious.
Jaimie - Inspired.
If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
David - A Danish coffeeshop with Bjarke Ingels and Peter Zumthor.
Jaimie - On my bucket list is an ancestry tour. I'd like to follow the route my ancestors took from Texas up the midwest or from out East heading West.
What is your favourite activity in Penticton?
David - Vees games.
Jaimie - Farmers market.
What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
We have a toddler so we have a pretty thick skin now lol.
What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
David - Being accepted to give a presentation on Architecture and people who are Deafblind at the Deafblind International Convention in Perth, Australia.
Jaimie - My time at school in Kelowna at the Centre for Arts and Technology really inspired me to become a small business owner one day.
Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
David - Spending every summer at my Amma and Afi's place in Winnipeg with all the Aunties, Uncles, and cousins.
Jaimie - Family camping trips were always pretty awesome, growing up on the Prairies and then spending the summers in BC was pretty awesome.
Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
We are pretty up to our elbows now with our business and our toddler but previously Dave was part of the Summerland Kinsmen and Jaimie was on the Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity South Okanagan.
If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
David - Fear mongering.
Jaimie - Racism.
Where would you sneak away to in Penticton to spend some time alone?
David - Skaha beach.
Jaimie - A nice walk along the KVR either along Skaha or in the Uplands area.
Where would you like to see positive change in Penticton and why?
David - True affordable housing.
Jaimie - I'd like to see the divide the Skaha Park Marina created be mended. The special interest group that was against the development seems to be having a hard time letting it go and it's continuing to cause a lot of upset for no reason.
What do you think makes Penticton great?
Both - The setting is idyllic and the arts culture is pretty awesome.
What are 3 things on your bucket list?
David - Visit Segrada Familia when it's completed; go to Iceland (where my maternal ancestors are from); do an Architectural tour of Europe.
Jaimie - Become a published author; master plan a development community using renewable energy sources, passive design principles, and eclectic design; and visit Morocco.
Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
We self-taught ourselves how to play the didgeridoo while we were in Australia!

What is the name of your business/organization?
Haywood Design + Build.
Why did you get into/start this business?
It's always been the plan, right from the moment we started dating we knew we wanted to do this together.
What is the goal of your business?
To develop beautiful, functional, and sustainable homes in the Okanagan and throughout Canada.
What has been your biggest struggle either at work or in life?
That previous question regarding the "moment to yourself".... ya that. :)
If you could start all over again would you do things the same or would things be different?
Wouldn't change it for the world.
What do you always find yourself saying?
Both - "What's for dinner and whose cooking it?"
Tell us your best piece of life advice.
David - "No bad days."
Jaimie - "You never know until to you try."
If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
David - I guess I kinda answered that in a previous question, Bjarke Ingels and Peter Zumthor
Jaimie - Oprah, she's met thousands of people from all walks of life and she's gained so much knowledge and insight. Despite the awfulness of some people, she doesn't let that get in her way.
Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
Our community has a lot to offer and by supporting that we encourage it to grow.
What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Starting our business and having a baby within a year of each other lol.

Everyone at The Cannery Trade Centre, from the diverse range of small businesses to the owners to the Manager Jill Bateman who is pretty much Super Woman if we've ever seen!
