What is your name?
Amy Litster.
Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kelowna?
I was born and raised in Vernon, but have been a Kelowna girl for the last six years.
Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
That is a toss up! It would be between my spouse Adam and my son Tyler! Adam is my rock, super supportive and my best friend. Tyler is the most hilarious kid ever! Even though he's just one year old, he has the biggest personality and the best dance moves.
If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
Anywhere warm! I love heat. But if I had to pick a place I would pick Costa Rica or Thailand.
What is your favourite local store in Kelowna and why?
I really can't just pick one! I absolutely love walking around the downtown core.
What is your favourite activity?
I love boating, wake surfing, and camping!
What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
When I was pregnant I would put everything, keys, wallet, and phone, in the fridge. Everyone at work was confused as to why I was doing this but I couldn't say anything because it was a secret! So instead, I looked like a flake!
What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
I had the privilege of telling a man who lived on the streets for eight years that an apartment came available for him. It was just before Christmas, so it made it even sweeter! Many tears of happiness were shed! I'll never forget it.
Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
My favourite childhood memory would be spending time on our boat with friends and family. My mom would make the best lunches ever, my dad would try to knock us off tubes and it was always just the best time!
Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
I have worked with the homeless in many different ways. I've spent time with Inn From The Cold, I have gone downtown and purchased food for people, and taken time to hear people stories and they have some amazing stories. Adam and I have picked up dogs from people who live on the street, brought the dogs home, bathed them and returned them to their fur parents. I also volunteer my time and talk with moms! Being a mom is hard, and so I really strive to be open about it within our community. I just try to offer support in anyway that I can.
If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
I would want to change the stigma that comes along with people having mental health issues. Whether it be issues such as addiction, depression, or anxiety, it doesn't make the person lazy or crazy. I find that people who have the strongest opinion about mental health are more scared of it than anything. Many don't know much about it, about the lack of resources, and the fact that each person's story is different, which can make a huge impact on the outcome of their life. I want our society to be more open about it, talk about the tough stuff, and strive for change, not just complain.
What is your favourite activity in Kelowna?
Going to the Kelowna Rockets game! We have met some amazing people there and have a great time at the games!
Where would you sneak away to in Kelowna to spend some time alone?
Alone time? That's rare! I like being outside but usually it would be walking my dogs at the dog park.
Where would you like to see positive change in Kelowna and why?
I would like to see more problem solving in various areas like homelessness, mental health issues, addictions and deaths due to drug use. It seems that many have an opinion but hide behind that opinion and don't actually try to help solve the issues.
If you were granted one wish for work or in life, what would it be?
Happiness. Happiness for other people, happiness for my friends and family and happiness for myself.
Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I love dipping french fries in Frosty's.
What is the name of your business/organization?
Interactive Counselling Ltd.
What does your business do?
We counsel individuals, couples, youth and families.
How do people connect with you through social media? (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest)
Facebook.
Why did you get into/start this business?
I love helping people, it is as simple as that. I can do that in my counselling practice each and every day. I'm lucky, I love my job!
What is the goal of your business?
To help people through the struggles they face in their life.
What has been your biggest struggle either in work or life?
Balance for everything. Finding enough time in a day to be a Counsellor, a Mom, a spouse, do typical life duties, and find time for self care can be a huge struggle.
If you could start all over again would you do things the same or would things be different?
I see areas in my life where I wish I made different decisions, but I wouldn't change it at this point. I love my job and love my family! I would never want to be without either.
Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
In my opinion, it is better to support a local business owner and help them succeed in my opinion. If we can help one another, Kelowna will be an even better place!
Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
Without a doubt in my mind it would be my spouse Adam! He has supported me in countless ways over many years. He is amazing partner in life and just the best Dad! I'm extremely thankful for him.
My nomination for the In Focus spotlight is:
Ashley Lohse, she's a sleep consultant with Pam Nease. If you are a sleep deprived Mom, she will be your angel!
Other information you would like to share:
If we could all do something kind for someone, it can make a big difference! Open a door, say hello to someone you don't know, give a kind word to a fellow Mom or Dad, ANYTHING. If we can all judge a little less, and give a little more, Kelowna would be an even better place to live!
