UPDATE: BC dog reunited with owners after going missing in mountains

(Update: April 24 at 6:44 am): Missing pooch Freeway has been reunited with his owners.

North Shore Rescue said in a social media post the dog was "found/grabbed" and is now "back home."

"Big thanks to everyone who shared our posts, kept an eye out, and donated to help offset the cost of this search," the team posted.

(Original story: April 23 at 4:45 pm): There has been a positive development in the search for a dog who went missing in the North Shore mountains on Monday.

The dog, named Freeway, was spotted alive and reportedly without serious injuries today, but North Shore Rescue (NSR) says he is “very scared and running away.”

It all began Monday when NSR members responded to help search for Freeway, who got away from his owner and fell down a steep slope on Cypress Mountain.

They responded to the call with rope rescue and drone teams, but were unable to find the dog after an extensive search.

That search resumed today and there was a breakthrough early this afternoon, as NSR search teams and Cypress staff spotted Freeway alive and “seemingly uninjured.”

However, the dog’s fearful state has made him hard to corral and he has since been tracked off the ski hill, through the parking lot and south of the ski hill area.

“Search crews and the dog’s owner are in hot pursuit,” explained a social media post from NSR, adding that Freeway’s speed and endurance is making that process difficult.

The last sighting of the frightened animal was around 3 pm in the area of the West Cypress Creek Trail and the dog appeared to be heading toward Eagle Lake.

NSR has speculated that Freeway could make his way into the West Vancouver community if he continues running south and urged the public to keep an eye out for the dog.
